[Blog] Stats to Prove That Maybe We Don't Need a Striker to Succeed
Written by superblueflude on Wednesday, 27th Jan 2010 14:55

My last blog was entitled 'How Hard Can It Be To Sign a Striker?' in response to a lot of fans saying we need one urgently.

However, I've since found that we might not actually need a striker at all and we could still be succesful with the players we have without breaking the bank.

Firstly Birmingham City - 2008/2009 season finished second - automatic promotion, total goals scored 54.

We have currently scored 31 goals, so baring in mind that we still have 20 games left to score 23 goals - it sounds daunting but not that hard!

Then I looked at the table the year before and Hull finished in third and scored a total of 65, again only 34 goals in 20 games to do this, so again not even two goals a game needed.

Also note that Bristol City finished fourth with a goals total of just 54 goals. The year before saw Derby in the play-off area with 62 goals.

So, although the play-offs remain a dream and relegation is just behind us, I think talk of team unity is called for and not just a new striker - 1-0 brings three points, losing 4-5 doesn't.

For me we should stick with the strikers we have and build on the improvement we've made and win those scrappy games by one or two goals. I'm happy with these and I would prefer three 1-0 wins on the bounce instead of two losses and then a 5-0 win.

So, I can understand why Roy Keane may be looking at other areas instead of purely a striker. For example, would a left-footed winger provide quicker crosses for the strikers for example compared to a right-footed one who needs to come back on himself?

well i totaly agree with what your are saying how ever, we seem to have 3 strikers who are struggling to find the net, well one totaly cant find it at the moment. and with a young conner coming through as well.

is it that the midfiled isnt putting in the quality killer passes to the front men or is it that the defence keeps hoofing it upo the field missing out the midfiled.

i just dont no but again i will say this

any of the front men we have will put the ball in the net but to me it seems to be how the rest of the team are playing.

we need to keep it down and start feeding the ball out from aaron to the defence then through the midfield and then forward to our strikers more.

coventry was a prime example, first half we were a bit poor because of this, aaron just kept hoofing it up the field when he had ball in hand instead of feeding it to liam ect.

but second half that changed and we was away.

blackpool and qpr springs to minbd to when the midfiled put through loads of killer passes for players to run on to and they all created good chances for the scorers, this i feel is were we need to be at

so we just need walters fit and play wide right along with norris grant and jack on the left. i dont like walters upfront as he is alot better on the right which in turn will give thr front men more of a chance to strike.

i recon stead and priskin should have a few gamnes upfront from the off with conner and pabs on the bench as inpact players.

but still thats my say any how

We have scored 15 goals in the last 8 games. If we continued that scoring rate over the remaining 20 games we would score another 37 goals, ending with a total of 68.

On current form we could score enough goals (theoretically) to get in the play-offs.

But could we get enough points? That's a much tougher question.
